Since colonial times, it has been a center of learning excellence. Boston, together with New York, were the financial centers of 19th century America.
Like other old cities, Boston developed a
range of steam-powered industries, such as textile making. By the 1950s these kinds of factories
were outdated, and new factories were opening
in other parts of the country. The result was that Boston began to decline. The renewal of the city and its growth again has come about from high technology industries that are closely connected with university research. Because of its long history, Boston has also seen a rise in the amount of tourism. Today, Boston is placed among the top 30 most economically powerful cities in the world.
