   The Acropolis
At first the ancient Greeks built their cities on hills. They did this because it is hard for enemies to charge up a hill and attack it. They put walls round the city to make it like a fort. A city like a fort on a hill was called an acropolis.
As time went by people moved down the hill and set up the city there. The acropolis was used as a sanctuary for the gods, and temples were built there.
