      Temples to the gods
The ancient Greeks set aside part of the countryside for their gods. These places were called sanctuaries. The ancient Greeks’ temples were built in the sanctuaries. A temple had many tall columns to hold up the roof.
Inside a temple was a large statue of
a god or goddess. In front of the statue was a small table where people put their offerings. Behind the statue was a room where the gifts to the god or goddess were stored.
When a person had made an offering to the god or goddess they went outside the temple to an altar and worshipped there.
This is what a temple might have looked like.
