GETTING TO KNOW THE ANCIENT GREEKS
The Parthenon (which dates from the Classical Period) is one of the most famous buildings in the world. Much of its detail is now lost, but you can still see the pleasing proportions and the way the columns taper slightly towards the top. This gives the huge building a more graceful appearance (see also page 15).
The end of ancient Greek times
The time of the ancient Greeks lasted for about 700 years. Building and the arts were most developed around the 5th century BC and ancient Greece was most powerful around the time of Alexander the Great, in about 330 bc.
But after Alexander, the power of the ancient Greeks gradually declined
and the Greeks were finally defeated by the Romans,
making Greece part of the Roman empire in about 146 bc.
E Amazing sculptures such as this 6m high statue of the god Apollon, were made in the Classical Period.
