  The peoples from the ancient Greek cities captured parts of many neighbouring lands, and formed an empire whose people used the Greek language. For a short while, under the leadership of alexanDer tHe great, the empire swelled from lands along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea to include Egypt and also
Asia as far as northern India. It was a huge empire for such a small country (picture 4).
