Storm waves will always erode soft rocks faster than hard rocks. Low cliffs will always erode faster than high cliffs. It makes sense not to build in places facing storm waves unless the cliff rock is hard.
Look to see where new sand
is settling out
When waves carry sand from place to place they use up energy. If they use energy carrying sand, they cannot use that energy to erode cliffs. This is why a wide beach is a good protection against erosion. If the sand is settling out to make sandbanks and low islands, the land behind them (not on them) will be naturally protected and a safe place to build houses.
2 The coast near Lisbon, Portugal. Compare the developments with those shown in picture .
Think about the future
We may not be able to do much about houses that have already been built in hazardous places. But we can stop people making the same mistakes in the future (picture 2). This is where planners come in. They can stop any future building close to retreating coasts, and encourage people to build where the sand is settling out. This saves property being damaged and costs absolutely nothing.
3 This resort in Dubai has been built out to sea in the shape of a palm tree. This shape gives a huge coastline for beach hotels and houses. It is protected by a giant breakwater.
