Beaches of many uses
Some parts of a beach are used by holidaymakers more than others. This is why.
During summer, a sandy beach can become filled with holidaymakers.
Such a large number of people can
have a very big impact on the beach and the features around it, but the beach also has an impact on them.
Choosing a spot on the beach
Look closely at picture and you will see that people are not scattered evenly over the beach, but are crowded together. This happens because some parts of the beach are more suitable to use than others.
The top of the beach
The top of the beach (picture 2) is the highest and driest part of the beach. It is out of reach of the waves for the longest part of each day, and it is the most sheltered part of the beach. For all of these reasons, many people choose this part of the beach to sit or sunbathe on, and so it becomes the most crowded.
Holidaymakers make use of the dry upper beach at the most sheltered end of a bay. This is Woolacombe in Devon.
