G 3 This sandy beach slopes gently, and waves lap over it. You can see that this makes a very attractive beach for holidaymakers.
Steep beaches are made
of shingle
Waves easily sort out the various sizes of material. Wherever the coast faces storm winds, the waves are sometimes fierce, so mud and sand cannot settle – only pebbles are heavy enough not be swept back out to sea. Pebbles always make steep beaches (picture 2).
Gently sloping beaches are
made of sand
Waves cannot bring pebbles to parts of the beach that are sheltered, such as in bays (picture 3). In these places, beaches are made of sand and are gently sloping (but not flat).
Flat beaches are made of mud
Even mud can settle in very sheltered places such as near estuaries. Muddy beaches are almost flat, but the sticky mud is not very attractive to walk on.
F 2 This is a beach made of pebbles. Pebbly beaches are often very steep. This can make them unattractive for holidaymakers.
