The video podcast consists of several parts: 1. Warm up
The Crazy Joe conversation at the beginning is intentionally long so that children become enveloped in the friendly characters. There is no intention to jump straight in to the topic. Time must be given for the children to settle. Using a video form of podcast with avatars makes it so much easier to develop a friendly environment for learning. No one talks
down to the children and no one trivializes the subject matter under the heading of ‘fun’. Fun in this context is distracting, and leaves children confused as to what they have learned. If they are engaged by the environment, they will not need to be told that something is fun.
The characters are placed in a popular and easy to understand environment - the Wild West. It provides a simplified backdrop
for all kinds of issues and explanations that a normal environment would not.
The characters always have the same kind of predictable banter so that children immediately know they are in the world of Crazy Joe, they do not have to learn a new environment each lesson.
The environmental wrapper is a kind of fantasy land - like a funfair or a theme park. This is especially important for those who do
