Skylab
You can understand a lot about the development of the American Skylab if you know that it was first called the Apollo applications program. It directly followed the amazing Apollo program for reaching the Moon.
Originally, more manned missions to the Moon were planned after Apollo 17, but they were canceled due to cost. It was then necessary to think about what to do with the pieces of hardware that were sitting unused on the ground. It was decided to turn them into a space station called Skylab. Skylab was launched in 1973, using a Saturn V rocket.
