 Io—Io is one of the most geologically active moons in the Solar System. The inset picture shows some of the spectacular volcanoes. In
the main picture the surface has pastel colors, and the black, brown,
green, orange, and red patches
show the
volcanic
areas.
Io
The third largest of Jupiter’s moons, some 3,630km across. It is the innermost of the Galilean moons and orbits at 422,000km from Jupiter’s surface. It is geologically very active and has spectacularly explosive volcanoes. The material rising from the
volcanoes can reach 280km above the surface
and spread out 500km.
  Hyperion
 Hyperion
One of the moons of Saturn, nearly 1.5 million km from the planet’s surface. It is about 400km across.
I
Iapetus
The third largest moon of Saturn, being 1,460km across. It orbits at 5.5 million miles from the surface of the planet.
Impact crater
(See: Crater.)
Inferior planets
The two planets closer to the Sun than the Earth—Mercury
and Venus.
International
Space Station
(ISS)
A collaborative effort
among NASA, ESA
(European Space Agency), and Russia to build the largest space station ever. The program is ongoing.
J
Janus
A moon of Saturn some 200km across and 151,00km from the planet’s surface (see: Moons).
Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)
A NASA facility in Pasadena, California, that tracks and controls space probes.
Johnson Space Center (JSC)
A NASA facility near Houston, Texas, that designs and develops crewed spacecraft. It houses Mission Control for the Space Shuttle flights.
Jovian
Anything relating to the planet Jupiter.
Jovian planet
Any of the four, outer gaseous planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. They are also called gas giants.
   International Space Station.
