A sacrament is a special ceremony in the Christian Church. Christians believe that sacraments help people grow closer to God.
Different Christian churches have different beliefs about sacraments. The Roman Catholic Church teaches that there are seven sacraments.
These are:
Baptism
Baptism is often the first sacrament a person receives.
Water is poured over a person's head, or they are immersed in water.
Christians believe baptism welcomes a person into the Christian family and marks a new beginning with God.
Reconciliation
This sacrament is sometimes called Confession.
People tell a priest about things they have done wrong and ask for God's forgiveness.
Christians believe that God forgives those who are truly sorry.
Holy Communion
This sacrament is also called the Eucharist.
During a church service, Christians receive bread and wine. Catholics believe these become the Body and Blood of Christ in a special way.
Holy Communion helps Christians remember Jesus and his sacrifice.
Confirmation
Confirmation allows Christians to confirm the promises made at baptism.
A bishop usually places oil on the person's forehead and prays for them.
Many Christians see confirmation as an important step in their faith journey.
Marriage
Marriage joins two people together in a lifelong commitment.
Christian marriage is based on love, faithfulness and mutual support.
Many Christian weddings take place in church.
Holy Orders
Holy Orders is the sacrament through which men become deacons, priests or bishops.
People who receive Holy Orders dedicate their lives to serving God and the Church.
Anointing of the Sick
This sacrament is given to people who are seriously ill, elderly or facing an operation.
A priest anoints the person with special oil and prays for them.
Christians believe it brings comfort, strength and God's blessing during difficult times.
Why are the Sacraments Important?
Christians believe that sacraments are not just ceremonies. They are special moments when God is present in people's lives.
The seven sacraments mark important stages of life, from joining the Church through baptism to receiving support during illness.
They help Christians worship God, strengthen their faith and feel part of the Christian community.
