Q1: What is the white flakey material in a kettle?

[Answer]

Limestone and chalk rock are natural substances that dissolve in rainwater and they are often found in tapwater. However, the limestone is easily made to come out of the water, and when this happens it makes rock again.

If you look inside a kettle you may see a white coating on the heating element or you may see flakes of white material – that is limestone.
