The Solar System contains a large number of small pieces of rock and ice. These are called comets and asteroids.

Comets sometimes come quite close to the Earth, and then we can see their spectacular white dust trails in the night sky.

Any small object entering the Earth's atmosphere is a meteoroid. As it burns up, it creates a bright 'shooting star' in the sky.
