Q1: What happens when a solid melts?

[Answer]

When a pure solid gets warm enough, it melts and turns into a liquid.

Each substance melts at a different temperature. Ice, for example, melts at 0°C, whereas iron melts at 1100°C.

A solid is made from tiny particles locked together. When a solid is heated the particles in it swell and shake about until, finally, they shake loose enough to slide about. We see this as melting.
