Humans look much the same when they are young and old. Children simply get bigger as they get older.
But insects are very different. They have hard shells which cannot stretch smoothly like skin. So, they have to grow in steps, shedding, or moulting, their old skin several times.
Many also change dramatically during their lives, for example changing from a caterpillar to a butterfly.
