Lights, heaters, cookers, irons and washing machines all run on mains electricity. They give out heat and light because electricity is flowing through them.
Only some materials allow electricity to flow through them. Most of these are metals (which is why there are metals inside lights and heaters). Plastics don't allow electricity to flow, and so we use plastics as cases to keep us safe from the electricity.
