Light starts out from a source, such as the Sun or a torch. It then travels in straight lines.

It's much darker where light can't reach directly. We say places like this are in the shade.

If you look towards a source of light when something is blocking the light, you see a dark outline of the object. This is a silhouette. The dark shape the object casts on the ground is a shadow.
