There are many ways of making light so that we don't have to sit in darkness when the Sun goes down.
Here we see many of the common ways that have been used down the ages. They are all based on the same idea: if something gets very hot it begins to give out light.
All of these examples also give out heat, so if we are looking to conserve energy, these would not be our first choice today…
