A soil is loose material that forms on top of solid rock.

Usually soil and plants stop us from seeing the rock underneath, but we can tell if the rock is hard or soft because hard rock makes hills and soft rock makes low vales or valleys.

Some rock can be used for building stone.

The most useful soils have a mixture of sand and clay, so they drain well, but hold water for plants.
