We eat foods because we enjoy them. This is because our tongues have special places that are sensitive to special flavours.

There are four areas of 'taste buds' around the edges (sweet, sour, bitter, salty) and one in the middle (yummy). Between them, they tell us what food tastes nice and what tastes horrible.

Try a blindfold test, by using sugar, vinegar, salt and yoghurt. Try a small spoonful of each. Your tongue should tell you which is which.

Our tongue likes some tastes and these are the foods that contain things our bodies need for health.

Bitter things are often poisonous, which is why our tongues don't like tasting them.

Now try some sauces that we put on our food. These are blended to taste really yummy.
