Looking at materials (2D0)
The basic principles of materials.
Playing time: 4 min (V604)
Starch (2D2) Looking at how a material behaves, for example, floating then dissolving if made of starch, but floating and no change if made of polystyrene foam.
Playing time: 6 min (V605)
Plastic (2D4) How when you mix some materials together they make new materials.
Playing time: 5 min (V606)
Changing shape (2D5) How by squeezing and pushing and pulling you can change the shape of a material.
Playing time: 4 min (V607)

Heating materials (2D6) How materials change irreversibly when heated. Use this video as an example of a common material - toast- to see how the bread changes. This is a real time video, so explain that the scientist is making an experiment to find out how changes take place. He will be heating the bread for more and more time, making it hotter and hotter. It will change texture, become hard and brittle and get small compared to a slice of untoasted bread. Children could compare bread and toast while they watch this.
Playing time: 10 min (V608)
Boiling (2D9) Boiling is a reversible change of water from liquid to gas. Explain that boiling produces high, dangerous temperatures. In fact, many changes only occur when materials are heated.
