A muscle is different from other organs in the body. It can make itself shorter. The reason that a muscle can get shorter is due to its cells. They have tiny fibres inside them which can slide along one another.
If you put one pencil in front of another then slide it back until they are both side by side you have made a simple model of how the fibres work in muscle cells.
