Q: Why are these people bowing?

Bowing is a way to show respect to the Buddha and to other people. It is also a way to show humility.

Buddhist worship involves many types of bowing. Buddhists often bow to monks and nuns to show their respect.

During worship, many Buddhists bow to a statue of the Buddha. Sometimes they bow by lying on the floor and placing their hands above their heads. This type of bow is called a prostration.
