The langar is a demonstration of the Sikh ideal of equality.
The founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak, began the tradition of the langar as
a way for all Sikhs to practice equality. Everyone is expected to contribute to
the langar and to the cooking and serving of the food.
In the langar everyone, rich and poor, old and young, Sikh and non-Sikh,
sits together and eats the same food.
