Note: Chancel is an Anglican term. Roman Catholics call this area the sanctuary.

Q: Who sits in the chancel?

The part of the church nearest to the altar is set aside for the clergy and choir. It is a kind of 'stage', where the clergy and choir perform the service, while the 'audience' sits in the nave.

It's often separated from the rest of the church by a rail, and sometimes by a step and a rood screen.

The Latin word for this screen is cancelli, from which the word chancel comes.
