Rood comes from the Anglo-Saxon word 'rode' which means a cross. A large cross was often hung in the middle of medieval churches from a beam between chancel and nave called a rood beam.
The screen below this was designed to separate people from the choir and add an air of mystery to proceedings. Because it was under the rood beam, it was called a rood screen. In front of it is the raised pulpit.
