Q: What happened before pews were made?

Seating was not always provided in a church. For centuries people stood or sat on the floor.

The benches with rails for kneeling are called pews. Most pews are open, but some, for the more wealthy, were boxed in to keep them from the poor.

The kneeling pads hung on the back of each pew are called hassocks.
