Q1: Why did the Vikings take over the Northern Isles so easily?

[Answer]

The Northern Isles were sparsely populated and were easily overwhelmed by the Norwegian Vikings.

However, there are no signs of battle and it appears that the islanders and Vikings lived alongside. As time went by the Viking ways were adopted by the whole islands and the islands remained in Norwegian hands until 1472, four hundred years longer than the Vikings in England.

Eventually the Norwegians gave the isles back to Scotland.
