In early Victorian times, the health of everyone was poor because nobody understood about disease.

Even after antiseptics were used and clean water supplies provided, children's health suffered because they still had to work long, often dangerous hours at hard jobs.

This changed only slowly and it was 1890 before children stopped working and went to school.
