Q1: Why did many walk or push handcarts?

[Answer]

They were not trying to get to Oregon, but to stop at the Great Salt Lake.

They also had the advantage of being a single community with a single purpose, and so were better placed to help one another along the trail.

Many were poor and could not afford a wagon, and so pushed and pulled handcarts all the way.
