The people who set out on the trail were mostly ignorant of what lay ahead.

They bought the wrong things, or simply too much stuff, and had to throw it out, or turn back. Many died along the trail.

All had to leave at about the same time in order to make use of the grazing. But it made the whole trail very congested, and sometimes people had to graze their animals miles away from the actual trail.
