The first people on the Oregon Trail were missionaries.
The trail began to be known as fur traders sought a way east from the Pacific.
It was the mountainmen who first learned how to navigate this difficult terrain, and when their fur trapping was over, they turned to leading wagon trains and even setting up trading posts for the pioneers (such as Fort Bridger).
