Q1: Why did they abandon the canoes?

[Answer]

By the third week in March the expedition was ready to leave.

Chinook people made this journey difficult, as they wanted to steal the expedition’s supplies.

They could not go against the strong river flow for very long, and had to abandon their canoes in April. As a result, they had to head out overland for the mountains with horses that they bought from the Walla Walla people.
