Q1: What was the store of salmon for?

[Answer]

They reached the Columbia just six days after arriving at the Snake. There the expedition paused to rest and meet some Native Americans who had gathered along the shore.

In one village Clark calculated that there were 10,000lbs (4,500 kg) of dried salmon, which the people used as their main food over the winter months.

Then the expedition headed down the Columbia for the Cascades, the last mountain range between them and the Pacific.
