Using friendly hand signals and gifts, the Corps managed to win the trust of the Shoshone. As a result, they called the camp they made in Shoshone land, Camp Fortunate.
Then something quite extraordinary happened. Sacagawea, the native woman they had taken on as an interpreter, recognized the Shoshone chief Cameahwait as her brother!
This made all the difference, and it was not long before the party had got horses and guides for the journey over the rugged Bitterroot range of the Rockies and towards the country of the Nez Perce nation.
