A few – a very few – people also lived far, far away on the western side of the continent.
But to reach these people it was necessary to go by ship right around the southern tip of South America – a journey that could take a year.
Also, in general, the people in the east were English-speaking, while those on the west were Spanish-speaking.
It all felt like – and behaved like – two different worlds.
