Henry decided to take a new wife (Anne Boleyn) but the Pope wouldn't allow this. So Henry broke away from the Roman Catholic church and formed the Church of England.
He then took over church lands and sold them off. He destroyed many monasteriesand threw out the monks. Many monasteries became ruins, but Henry now owned the land - and he could sell this for a profit.
