Raleigh tried again, this time under a leader called John White. They went back to Roanoke and John White's daughter gave birth to a girl – the first English child to be born in North America.
Again they ran out of food. John White set off back to England, but he was delayed by war and when he got back the settlement was empty. No one knows what happened to the settlers he left behind. Roanoke had failed.
