Q1: What did Gilbert do that earlier English sailors had not done?

[Answer]

By the 1580s Drake had sailed around the world, and the Spanish and Portuguese had settled as far north in the Americas as Florida.

The English had staked their claim to the northern parts of N. America, but no one had settled. In 1583 Sir Humphrey Gilbert set out with 5 small ships to change that. He landed in Newfoundland and began to set up houses.

Unfortunately he did not have enough supplies and had to leave, and was drowned on his way back to England.
