Q1: Where did the Portuguese go in South America?

[Answer]

Christopher Columbus arrived in the Americas in 1492. He thought he had arrived in India on the way to China, so he called the local people Indians. It has stuck. More on that in the next chapter.

With competition between Spain and Portugal hotting up, both countries went to the Pope for a ruling. The Pope gave everything west of a line to Spain, which meant all of America except for the eastern part of S America, now called Brazil.
