This story starts 44 years before the Battle of Hastings when, in 1022, Earl Harold Godwinsson was born.

As you can see he was not born king, but he was to become King Harold.

By 1042, when Edward the Confessor became king, Harold had made himself the most powerful man in England.

In 1066, Edward died without a son, so the throne was open to anyone who could claim it…
