Q1: Why were the Vikings able to raid so easily?

[Answer]

In the 9th century the Anglo-Saxons faced a severe challenge – England was attacked by the Vikings from Scandinavia.

The Vikings, who were mostly Danes from what is modern Denmark, attacked the coast just as the Anglo-Saxons had done centuries earlier, making hit and run raids on villages and their wealthy churches.

Then they invaded along the eastern coast and began to take over the country.
