The early Anglo-Saxons believed in many gods, such as Thor who protected the people in battle. Many of our names of days of the week come from this time.

Pagan Anglo-Saxons were fearsome warriors because they believed it was glorious to die in battle.

Christians did not believe this way, so when the Pope sent St Augustine to convert the Anglo-Saxons in 597 he also changed their way of life.
