1. The Colosseum, the amphitheatre in Rome, was begun in AD 80. It is a vast ellipse with tiers of seating for 50,000 spectators. Below the wooden arena floor, there were rooms for wild beasts and gladiators. It shows us what amphitheatres in Britain must have looked like.
