The Romans thought of Britain as made of a peaceful area, which they called the Civil Zone, and a frontier region where they were likely to suffer attacks. This they called the Military Zone.

The Civil Zone was east and south England, the Military Zone was the west and north.

In the Civil Zone Romans introduced their own way of life, bringing towns to Britain for the first time.
