Q1: Why was a garderobe a 'long drop'

[Answer]

People in Norman times were not used to going to a special room – the loo – to do their toilet. They mostly did it against the wall of the room they happened to be in. But over time, this changed in the more important castles.

The difference was in the building of garderobes, or toilet chambers. There was no flush water, but there was a seat, and below it a long drop to the base of the castle walls. In grand castles, the lord and lady had an en-suite garderobe, and there were garderobes in towers along the walls, too. So the living environment got a little better – provided the people used them.
