Castles were of all kinds of size and importance. How big and sumptuous they were, and what went on, depended on how important the lord was.
In a simple castle there might be no separate kitchen, while in a grand castle – and especially where the king might visit – the castle might have to prepare for the arrival of perhaps hundred of guests and so they needed big kitchens.
