The great hall was usually the largest building in castle. Oginally inside the keep, many castle-owners rebuilt it in grander scale in later centuries as a hall against the castle wall.
The great hall (and buildings built alongside it, such as the lord's retiring room and the chapel) had lead roofs.
Lead was valuable and was soon stripped away, and the roof timbers followed, so you have quite a bit of rebuilding to do.
