The keep was very small, for the lord and lady had to live with their servants and a garrison of troops. They all lived together in a single large first floor room called the great hall. There was just a fire in the middle of the floor.
To make more space, and to give some extra protection, a horse-shoe-shaped wall a curtain wall was built out from the keep. Horses could be kept here and there was even room for new, larger 'state' apartments and even separate bedrooms. This is why the keep went out of use.
